FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION ABOUT DNA


What is DNA?

         DNA(Deoxyribonucleic Acid) is the fundamental buiding block of an individual's entire genetic makeup. It is a component of virtually every cell in the human body. Furthermore, a person's DNA is the same in every cell.
         For example, the DNA in the man's blood is the same as the DNA in his skin cells, semen, hair and saliva. Hence, DNA is a powerful tool because each person's DNA is different from every other individual's, except for identical twins.


What is DNA Typing?

         DNA typing is procedure wherein the DNA extracted from a biological sample obtained from an individual is tested. The DNA is processed to provide identification of genetic sequences.


What is STR DNA Typing?

         STR stands for Short Tandem Repeat. This new procedure is widely used in the United States and other countries in the application of DNA for human identification.



Analysis Section Capabilities


    1. Provides Forensic DNA fingerprinting / analysis tyo match the suspect of the crime in the cases of:
  • Alleged rape/gang rape and other sexual crimes wherein biological sample(s) are recovered.
  • Alleged murder/homicide to establish identity of perpetrator
  • Found dead bodies where standard manner of identification could not establish identity.

    2. Identifies victims of mass disasters such as in:
  • plane crashes
  • Ship wreckage
  • Fire disasters
  • Other mass disaster wherein identification of the cadavers is needed.

    3. Establishes paternity /maternity in child custody conflict and inheritance lawsuits ti link consaguinity

    4. Provides proper training and lectures to the PNP personnel in obtaining and handling evidence at the crime scene and the correct procedures in the chain of custody.

    5. Creates criminal database for convicted persons.

    6. Assists Crime laboratory technical divisions and other investigative agencies in the establishemnt of the identification of a person(s) for scientific as well as modern search for justice and truth wherein limited amount(s) of specimen are obtained.

    7. Conducts Forensic DNA Studies and researches.
