INTRODUCTION

     In our country today, the Science of Forensic Firearms Identification, often referred to as Forensic Ballistics, has been fully recognized and accepted as a potent aid in despensing justice as proven in so many decided criminal cases, both in civil and military courts.
     In the drive against crimes involving firearms and ammunition, the police and military authorities are greatly guided in their investigations by this Science.

What is Firearms Identification?

        Firearms Identification is a discipline in forensic science that has as its primary concern the determination if a bullet, cartridge case or other ammunition component was fired from a specific firearm.
         It involves a comparative analysis in determining whether a bullet or cartridge case was fired from a particular firearm.

MISSION

     To provide technical and Scientfic Investigative aid to the different offices of the PNP, AFP and other investigative agencies of the government in so far as firearms identification is concerned.

CAPABILITIES

1.     Conducts examination of evidence firearms, fired bullets/cartridge cases, shotgun shells, wads, pellets and related specimens recovered from the crime.
2.     Conducts test firing of evidence firearms of different caliber;
3.     Conducts scene of crime operations and filed laboratory work;
4.     Determines the classification of firearms as to power, pursuant to RA 8294;
5.     Conducts lectures, briefings and seminars on firearm identification;
5.     Appears in Court as Expert Witness; and perform such other functions as maybe directed by the Director, Crime Laboratory.

EQUIPMENT

     The NHQ Crime Laboratory and its Regional and NCR District Offices are equipped with the necessary equipment and facilities such as Bullet Recovery Tubes, Bullet Comparison Microscopes, Stereoscopes, Engraving/Marking Tools and Secured Evidence Room.

REQUIREMENTS FOR REQUEST FOR LAB. EXAMINATION
    All requests for examinations must be accompanied by a letter-request addressed to the D, CL, Attn: C, FAID or to the Crime Laboratory Chief in your area.

RELEASE OF EVIDENCE

    1.    Letter-request for withdrawal or release of firearm, from the concerned investigating unit/office.
    2.    Court order or resolution from the Court/Prosecutor’s office, or;
    3.    Certification from concerned investigating unit/office, attesting to the fact that there is no case filed or to be filed in Court involving the subject firearm.
    4.    Latest identification card of authorized receiver.
    5.    Authenticated copy of memorandum receipt (for government issued), or firearms license and permit to transport firearm from the FED, CSG.

11 and Above (bullets or shells including firearm) 5-10 days 12 days from the date of examination
Firearm only 1 day 2 days from the date of examination

Note:

        Duration of examinations and release of laboratory reports may be extended depending on the following factor:
     1.   Availability of standard specimen and equipment;
     2.   Quantity and the condition of the specimen.
     3.   Cross-matching of the submitted evidence with other specimens on file, if necessary.
