Our Mission

To enforce the law, maintain peace and order, and ensure public safety over Philippine Territorial Waters, lakes, and rivers, along coastal areas to include ports and harbors, and small islands for the security and sustainable development of the Maritime environment.

Our Functions

1. To mobilize, organize and manage resources for effective police operations in its territorial waters;

2. To uphold the rule of law affecting the maritime environment;

3. To track down and neutralize terrorist activities, drug traffickers, smuggling operations, and other illegal activities utilizing the ports and coastal areas;

4. To enforce special laws such as, but not limited to forestry law, fishery law, human trafficking and trafficking of wildlife and other endangered species; and

5. To perform other duties as directed by the Chief, PNP.

OUR HISTORY

Guardian of the Sea and Protector of Maritime Environs

In accordance with the constitutional mandate of Republic Act 6975 otherwise known as DILG Act of 1990-PNP Law that there should be one police force that is national in scope and civilian in character. An act establishing the Philippine National Police under a reorganized Department of Interior and Local Government.

The law stipulates that the Maritime Command is one of the National Service Support Units (NSSUs) of the Philippine National Police pursuant therefore, to NHQ PNP General Order No. 58 dated January 16, 1991, the unit came into being effective same date.

September 12, 1996, NAPOLCOM issued Resolution No. 96-058, “Further amending Resolution No. 92-36 approving the streamlining of the PNP Organizational Structure and reiterating the role of the Police Regional Offices”, henceforth paragraph 3 and 4 said resolution provides for the renaming of PNP NSUs that shall consist of operational and administrative support units and be renamed “Maritime Command” to “Maritime Group” and further renaming “Maritime Districts” to “Regional Maritime Office (RMO)”.

In order to facilitate the organizational development of the unit, NHQ, PNP designated then POLICE CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT ADAM M JIMENEZ, JR, as its first Director effective January 16, 1991 and now POLICE SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT ANGELO H SUNGLAO (DSC) was designated as the 9th Director of the PNP Maritime Group effective February 24, 2006 to date.   

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

The role of Maritime Group were refocused through its present mission which is “To enforce the law, maintain peace and order, and ensure public safety over Philippine Territorial Waters, lakes, and rivers, along coastal areas to include ports and harbors, and small islands for the security and sustainable development of the Maritime environment”.

To carry out this mission, fifteen (15) Regional Maritime Offices were strategically positioned with fifty three (53) Maritime Police Stations and twenty-nine (29) Maritime Police Precincts throughout the archipelago.

Faced with the challenge of terrorism, the Maritime Group provides security personnel onboard commercial and passenger vessels known as "Sea Marshals" to enhance police visibility in international and domestic ports and piers to protect passengers and cargoes from terrorist activities.
