Press Statement of
POLICE DIRECTOR GENERAL OSCAR D ALBAYALDE
Chief, Philippine National Police
June 28, 2018

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press.

I just came from a fruitful dialogue with officials of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippine in Intramuros, Manila. With me were PNP Director for Operations, PDIR Mao Aplasca; PNP Director for Police Community Relations, PDIR Eduardo Serapio Garado, NCRPO Director, CSupt Guillermo Eleazar; and Chief PIO, SSupt Benigno Durana.

We were received by Bishop Reynaldo G. Evangelista, Chair of the CBCP Permanent Council for Public Affairs; CBCP Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Marvin S. Mejia; Fr. Bernardo Pantin; and Fr. Jerome Secillaro

We briefed the CBCP officials on the present status of murder cases involving members of the Catholic Clergy and apprised them of our initial findings that: 1. These murder cases were unrelated; 2. There are different motives, and; 3. There is no apparent pattern in all of these incidents.

The CBCP shared its position not to arm priests. The PNP even informed them the idea of arming the priests is no longer relevant since the priest from Laguna where that call came from asked the PNP to help them to surrender their firearms.

We sought to get the support of CBCP on various areas of collaboration such as: 1. Faith-based support to the PNP internal cleansing program; 2. involvement of various Dioceses in the treatment and rehabilitation of drug offenders, and; 3. Assist PNP in filling-up 17 vacant plantilla posts for Catholic Chaplains in the PNP.

We obtained the assurance of the CBCP officials to bring up the matters discussed today in the forthcoming CBCP plenary in July.

The meeting ended on a high note. Before we adjourned, both CBCP and PNP panels agreed to hold more regular dialogues to firm up areas of collaboration that were identified.
