CRIME RATE DOWN DURING ELECTION PERIOD

Mobile checkpoints, patrol, and police visibility operations in crime-prone areas of the country proved effective in lowering the incidence of crime. This was among the post-election assessments of the PNP following the May 10 synchronized national and local polls.

According to PNP Spokesman, Chief Superintendent Joel R Goltiao, a comparative analysis of crime incidents during the three-month period from January to March 2004 showed an almost nine percent (9%) reduction in the Total Crime Volume as compared to the same period in year 2003.

A total of 19,109 crime incidents were recorded during the 1 st Quarter of 2004, compared with 20,981 crimes during the same period in 2003.

Crimes Against Persons during the 1st Quarter 2004 registered a decrease of ten percent (10%) as compared to 1st Quarter 2003.

These crimes include murder, homicide, physical injuries and rape which totaled 6,669 in 1st Quarter 2003 and 6,005 in 1st Quarter 2004.

Crimes Against Properties, on the otherhand, was slightly higher in 1st Quarter 2004 with 4,387 incidents, compared with 4,308 incidents in 2003.

The Bicol Region posted the most significant improvement of 31% decrease in Crime Volume, while Central Luzon posted a 28% decline for the 1st quarter of 2004.

According to Goltiao, Comelec-PNP checkpoints set-up in strategic locations around the country proved effective in controlling the movement and activities of criminal and terrorist elements during the election period.

To date, the PNP has already accounted for 1,622 firearms and arrested 2,048 violators of the gunban.
