10 FILIPINO COPS JOIN UN MISSION IN HAITI The Philippine National Police will send ten Filipino policemen to join the United Nations Mission in Haiti . The ten PNP members, led by Superintendent Lester Camba will leave on Oct.29 (Friday) via a regular flight. Formal send-off ceremonies will be held in Camp Crame today. PNP Chief, Director General Edgar B Aglipay said the PNP is sending a contingent to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as a commitment of the Philippine government to the international community. The Filipino peacekeeping mission will be tasked to maintain a secure and stable environment to support the constitutional and political process underway in Haiti . This is the second time the Philippines is sending a Civilian Police contingent to Haiti since 1994 when PNP officers were sent there as part of the UN peacekeeping mission to help secure the nation and oversee their transition from dictatorship to democracy. At present, there are 134 Filipino policemen serving under similar UN peacekeeping missions in East Timor, Kosovo , Liberia and Afghanistan . Thirteen (13) Filipino policemen are in East Timor serving as Civilian Police personnel under the UN Mission in Support of East Timor (UNMISET). Ninety (90) other police officers are serving under the UN Mission in Kosovo. Thirty (30) are currently deployed to the UNMIL in Liberia . A lone PNP representative is also serving with the UN Mission in Afghanistan . |
