PNP SPEARHEADS MAYON MERCY MISSION

PNP Chief, Director General Oscar C Calderon today sent-off a police contingent with eight tons of assorted relief supplies for victims of Supertyphoon Reming in the Bicol region.

The PNP Contingent from the Police Community Relations Group (PCRG) under Senior Superintendent Reynold Osia is spearheading the "Mayon Mercy Mission", organized by the Office of the President, for victims of the disaster in Albay, Sorsogon and Camarines provinces.

Calderon has instructed Osia to closely supervise the operation and insure an organized and practical distribution of the relief supplies in coordination with local government units and social welfare officials.

At 10:20 AM today, a convoy of some 250 trucks loaded with food, medicine, clothing, and construction materials left Manila for the Bicol region.

According to Osia, the PNP is heading the control group for the organized operation of Mayon Mercy Mission.

The convoy is expected to arrive in Bicol before midnight or early morning tomorrow, Osia said. The entire operation is expected to be completed in 3-4 days.

Aside from the eight tons of relief supplies, the PNP also provided security transportation, and other logistics requirement for the mission.

The National Disaster Coordinating Committee earlier announced that the United Nations has approved a $2.6-million aid package for victims of Reming (international codename "Durian").
