GENERALLY PEACEFUL SONA All public assemblies and mass activities held in diffrerent parts of Metro Manila and some key cities of the country were generally peaceful. This was the overall assessment of PNP Chief, Director General Oscar C Calderon on the activities staged by some cause-oriented groups and militant organizations as President Arroyo delivered the State of the Nation Address at the opening of the 13th Regular Session of Congress. Citing field reports culled by the National Operations Center in Camp Crame, Calderon said except for the march along Commonwealth Avenue staged by an estimated 5,000 participants, "the overall situation remained orderly and peaceful". "The readiness of our personnel in performing their duty and the cooperation of all concerned sectors including the participants in the mass actions made the day for all of us," Calderon said as he congratulated Task Force Kapayapaan Commander and NCRPO Chief, Director Vidal Querol for the smooth turnout of the event. "I congratulate as well the leaders and members of the different groups that marched to Commonwealth Avenue for a well organized activity consistent with what has been agreed upon," Calderon said. No other significant incidents were reported from the different regions of the country aside from the landmine attack staged by the New People’s Army at 7:30AM today in Tago, Surigao del Sur that injured 15 civilian commuters. As of press time, some groups continue to hold their program at the designated area along the northbound lane of Commonwealth Avenue with PNP units providing security and assistance. Smaller mass actions were also held in Cebu City and Davao City. |
