ORDERLY AND PEACEFUL SCHOOL OPENING

The nationwide opening of the new school year was general peaceful and orderly as an estimated 22-million students trooped back to shool today.

This was the assessment of PNP Chief, Director General Avelino I Razon Jr., as field reports reaching the National Headquarters indicated no significant incidents or peace and order issues affecting the opening of classes today.

"Except for the pockets of mass actions in some parts of Metro Manila, and the perennial rush-hour traffic, the situation was normal as we have expected," Razon said.

The National Capital Region Police Office has fielded 4,000 police personnel in the vicinity of schools and universities as a crime prevention measure and deterrent to streetcrime that usually victimize students.

These police personnel will be on the lookout for criminal elements that prey on students and school children, as well as school gangs and fraternities that are notorious for creating trouble.

According to PNP Spokesman, Chief Superintendent Nicanor A Bartolome, more police personnel have been fielded for police visibility and preventive patrol operations.

"Almost 95% of PNP's 125,000 police personnel are now assigned to regular law enforcement functions, with only five percent are performing administrative and office duty," Bartolome said.
